Visual Analytics: Theory and Best Practices

This workshop is designed for the intermediate Tableau user. Students in this class know their way around Tableau Desktop but want to improve their visualization skills while learning visual best practices. You will learn how memory and the human visual system affect how we interpret information. Using this knowledge, you can apply visual best practices that make your dashboards both visually pleasing and informative. Recommended prerequisites: Desktop I: Fundamentals, or equivalent experience.

  • Learn about the different types of memory and sensory processing
  • Explore methods of reducing cognitive load to focus and guide users
  • Understand the importance of color and color choices
  • Learn to create visualizations that inform without misleading
  • Understand which charts types to use for different scenarios (showing rank, comparing parts to whole, viewing data over time, and mapping)
