Training Workshops

Add a one-day training workshop to your conference experience and accelerate your learning. If you’re new to Tableau, it’s the fastest way to gain a solid foundation. Intermediate users can expand their skills, and experts will find in-depth treatments of advanced topics available only at Tableau Conference. These workshops are offered pre-conference on Tuesday for an additional fee, which is discounted for conference attendees.

  • Advance registration and an additional fee of £460 GBP + VAT is required. The fee can be paid during the registration process
  • Offered on Tuesday, 3 July, 2018 - 8:30 to 17:00 (see schedule for more details)

Desktop 201

This workshop is designed for the intermediate Tableau user who has solid working experience with Tableau and wants to further their Tableau Desktop skills. In this workshop, you will learn more about data connections, calculations, and Tableau features. Recommended prerequisites: Desktop I: Fundamentals, or equivalent experience.

  • Work with more complex data connections, including joins, blends, and unions
  • Create and use sets to visualize data that meets defined conditions
  • Learn more about how calculations work in Tableau
  • Create and use parameters
  • Build maps using background images and spatial files
  • Use more advanced dashboarding techniques, such as navigating between dashboards and creating device-specific dashboards
  • Create stories to tell a sequential data narrative

Desktop 301: Advanced Calculations

This workshop is designed for the advanced Tableau user who wants to learn more about creating and using calculations and table calculations. You will review calculation types used in Tableau, learn advanced table calculations, explore level of detail (LOD) expressions, and discuss when to use which type of calculation. Recommended prerequisites: Desktop II: Intermediate, or equivalent experience.

  • Review of calculations:
    • Number functions
    • String functions
    • Date functions
    • Aggregate functions
    • Type conversions
    • Logical functions
    • User functions
  • Understand table calculation scope and direction
  • Customize table calculations and use table calculation filters
  • Learn the different types of LOD expressions
  • Understand when to use which type of calculation for your data analysis

Desktop 302: Advanced Visualizations

This workshop is designed for the advanced Tableau user who wants to learn how to create and use more complex visualization types. In this workshop, you will learn about different advanced chart types, their recommended use cases, and how to build them. Recommended prerequisites: Desktop II: Intermediate; Visual Analytics; or equivalent experience.

  • Analyze time-based data
  • Learn how to perform cohort analysis and explore survey data
  • Explore advanced chart types, including Pareto charts and clustering
  • Learn how to do advanced geographical analysis
  • Apply advanced techniques for dashboards

Tableau Prep: Shaping your Data

This workshop is designed for the intermediate Tableau user who wants to create their own Tableau Prep flows to shape and prepare data for analysis in Tableau Desktop. In this workshop, you will learn how to incorporate Tableau Prep into your data analysis using hands-on scenarios that guide you through the data preparation portions of the analytic cycle. Prerequisites: Desktop I: Fundamentals; Desktop 101; or equivalent experience.

Visual Analytics: Theory and Best Practices

This workshop is designed for the intermediate Tableau user. Students in this class know their way around Tableau Desktop but want to improve their visualization skills while learning visual best practices. You will learn how memory and the human visual system affect how we interpret information. Using this knowledge, you can apply visual best practices that make your dashboards both visually pleasing and informative. Recommended prerequisites: Desktop I: Fundamentals, or equivalent experience.

  • Learn about the different types of memory and sensory processing
  • Explore methods of reducing cognitive load to focus and guide users
  • Understand the importance of color and color choices
  • Learn to create visualizations that inform without misleading
  • Understand which charts types to use for different scenarios (showing rank, comparing parts to whole, viewing data over time, and mapping)
